Padouk

Appearance:
The sapwood of Padouk tends to be a uniform cream or pale beige color, the heartwood is well-known for its rich reddish orange tone. Over time the heartwood seasons to a dark reddish or purple-brown color, and occasionally black. It features a moderately coarse texture, with large pores and a grain that can be straight or interlocked.

When freshly milled, African Padauk undergoes an extreme degree of color change. Its appearance will darken from the vivid orange color to a dark red (nearly black) color when fully aged/oxidized. Oil finishes hasten this process and allow the full color change to occur while water based finishes inhibit the full color range.

Interesting facts:
The Padouk tree is reported to reach heights up to 130 feet, with trunk diameters up to 60 inches. Generally branches form at about 70 feet from the ground.

In terms of relative abundance, African Padouk is reported to be relatively secure in the Congo, but it is officially classified as vulnerable in Cameroon.

Main uses: Due to its high strength, durability and outstanding stability, this wood is ideal for high-class flooring, furniture, joinery and cabinetmaking. Also for carving, paddles and oars, tool and knife handles, and decorative veneers. Padouk works well with hand and machine tools, glues easily and holds nails and screws well. Finishes to a beautiful sheen without the need for stain.
