Origin: Sumatra, Malay Peninsula and Borneo; throughout lowland forests, occasionally gregarious.
Appearance: Heartwood dark red brown to purple brown; sapwood light yellow, sometimes with a transitional red-brown zone. It is characterized by deeply interlocked grains. The texture is moderately fine to moderately course. Dry wood has a peppery smell.
Properties: Moderately easy to saw; dresses and bores smoothly, if grain not deeply interlocked. Moderately durable with some resistance to termite attack.
Principal uses: Construction materials, doors, windows, flooring.
